To strengthen the global capacity and leadership of women in STEM and AI by fostering international cooperation, empowering female talent across APEC member economies

Background

The rapid advancement of digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping industries and societies worldwide. As national boundaries fade, global competition for talent has become a defining challenge—not just for a select few, but for everyone.

Yet, gender disparities persist, especially in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, where women remain significantly underrepresented. Empowering women in these fields is no longer optional—it is essential for achieving inclusive innovation and sustainable growth.

Recognizing this, APEC has prioritized women’s participation in STEM as a key policy agenda. In response, the Ministry of Science and ICT of the Republic of Korea and the Korea Foundation for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (WISET) are launching the APEC Women in STEM Symposium 2025.

This inaugural symposium aims to highlight women’s leadership in AI, enhance the capacity of women in STEM across APEC economies, and foster transnational networks of collaboration among female scientists and engineers. By bringing together policymakers, experts, and next-generation talent, the symposium will help shape a more inclusive and sustainable future through global cooperation.
